This procedure was tested on openSUSE 12.1
Some of the most frequently asked questions new Linux users ask is how to play Restricted Media formats, especially in their internet browser. WMV was at one time a common media format on the internet, but is now largely replaced by Flash. Flash support is almost universally perfect, a caveat being that some sites employ the very latest Flash technology in association with Microsoft 'Silverlight'. Embedded video formats like .wmv can still be encountered and several options are available for this.

Option 1: MPlayer plugin

There is no mplayerplug-in package in the packman repository for opensuse 12.1( packman search)
  • In YaST
  • Select "Software Management"
  • In the View drop-down box in the upper left corner, select "Repository"
  • Choose Packman
  • Scroll down until you see the "mplayerplug-in," and select this package.
  • Now click the Accept button to install the package(s).
It is also possible to use zypper to install. zypper in mplayerplug-in

That's it. You should now be able to play most .wmv files you come across on the internet. Though you may have to check in Firefox - Tools - manage Content Plugins.

Option 2: VLC Mozilla plugin

  • In YaST
  • Select "Software Management"
  • In the View drop-down box in the upper left corner, select "Repository"
  • Choose Packman
  • Scroll down until you see the "vlc-mozillaplugin," and select this package.
  • Now click the Accept button to install the package(s).
It is also possible to use zypper to install. zypper in vlc-mozillaplugin

That's it. You should now be able to play most .wmv files you come across on the internet. Though you may have to check in Firefox - Tools - manage Content Plugins.

Option 3: Gecko-mediaplayer

  • Please add this Repository for version 11.2 of openSUSE. Other openSUSE versions should try the Packman version by scrolling down the Packman package list to gecko-mediaplayer:
